TACTE 2014 Conference
Riding the Waves of Change Brief Description of Presentation: The presentation will demonstrate a model of instruction which combines mathematical and welding concepts to build critical thinking skills in developmental mathematics learners which can be directly applied to their career field of welding. The purpose of the demonstration is two-fold: first, to provide instructors with a feasible course design option which allows welding technology certificate and degree prospects the opportunity to complete their developmental math requirements while simultaneously completing the requirements for a certificate or degree, and second, to explain how to design a hands-on contextualized course which will help to ensure that certificate holders and graduates of the Welding Technology program are proficient in mathematics and hence, well prepared for a job in the welding industry. Short Biography of Presenter: Carolyn Harnsberry is a full-time Instructor of Developmental Mathematics and the Program Coordinator for Developmental Mathematics at Galveston College in Galveston, Texas. In 2012, she served as a member of the Texas Instructional Technology State Leadership Team. She has served as a member of Galveston College’s Recruitment, Retention and Student Success Committee for the past several years and is also a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC). Also in 2012, Ms. Harnsberry was awarded the Exceptional Faculty Award by Galveston College and the Excellence Award by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD). In 2013, she designed the first hands-on, multi-discipline, contextualized course to ever be taught at Galveston College. She describes herself as one who is driven by both her passion for teaching and her dedication to student success. Ms. Harnsberry holds an Associate of Arts in Mathematical Science, a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematical Science, and a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of Houston-Clear Lake. |
